Silverbacks successful against MLS teams

Posted: Updated:

Maybe the Silverbacks have saved one of their best performances for the home crowd Wednesday when they host the Chicago Fire.

"I told these guys that there's nothing that really separates us from the guys at the next level," said Silverbacks defender Mike Randoph.

It'll be hard to beat the two they've already put on, getting their first and second wins over major league soccer teams within the last month.

"That gives us a boost knowing that if we play our game, we can beat a lot of teams," said midfielder Blair Gavin.

If the silverbacks are going to get their third win over a MLS team this year, they'll have to do it without three of their players and two of their coaches.

All five were given red cards during a game against the Colorado Rapids two weeks ago.

Players say it was one of the craziest games they've ever played it.

It all started when Jamie Chavez got tangled up with a Colorado player, and stepped on his face.

Players said what happened after was almost mind-boggling.

"I mean, it's almost one of those things that's so ridiculous you gotta laugh about it," said Gavin. "So, I had some friends on the other team, and we were talking about it, and we were like this is beyond ridiculous."

"I've never seen that many cards in a game," said Randolph. "I've never played with eight players and actually lived to tell the story."

Those three players and two coaches won't be available this week, but that won't stop this team any time soon.

"We've shown that we have enough confidence to get through the last two games and I'm willing to bet that we got enough of this for a third one," said Randolph. "So, I'm excited and I'm eager to get it started on Wednesday."

If the Silverbacks beat the Fire this week, they'll get another shot against a MLS team in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals in August.
