Price of blight: Elderly Detroit woman afraid of her own backyard

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - 79-year-old Geneva Essex keeps her place locked up tight.  Her home is sandwiched between two abandoned homes.

"I'm scared to death to come out here and sit in the backyard, " says Ms. Essex.

Play the video to see Amy Lange's video report.

One of the homes is condemned and foreclosure after a fire in 2010, the other on the verge of collapse. Ms. Essex is scared because with the dark, overgrown  yards of the house properties she can't see what or who may be in there.

That's no way for a nearly 80-year-old woman to feel in her own home, where she's lived since 1972.  She's got a gun, in case she needs it but prays she doesn't.

She says really wants the city of Detroit to make good on a promise from fours years ago, to tear the house that may soon collapse down.

A spokesperson from Mayor Mike Duggan's office is checking on when it is scheduled for demolition.  The administration is tearing about 700 houses down a month and the schedule is expected to ramp up to 1200 homes a month by September.

Let's hope the house next to Geneva is one of them.
