Colorado girl grabs shotgun, saves family from bear break-in

Posted: Updated:
PARK COUNTY, Co. - A 15-year-old Colorado girl's sharpshooting skills may have saved her family from an intruder-- of a different kind.  Rose Hill-- who is now known as "Grizzly Rose"-- grabbed her shotgun and took out a bear that broke into her family's Park County home just in time.

Rose tells FOX 31 Denver she was inside the house when she heard loud noises coming from the garage.

"All I heard was just crazy, everything was being thrown, hit, messed with, rattled around-- it was just insane," Rose said.   "Either someone's in the garage, someone's trying to break in-- or its an animal."

Her third guess, as it turns out, was dead on. As she looked a little further, her dogs leapt through the giant, bear-made hole left behind in the garage door.

"I was like, by God-- something broke in!" Rose recalled.

That's when Rose came running with a pair of shotguns.  She fired at the huge bear once, and then again and again.

"Then I grabbed this gun really quick, and he was going and going. I ran and ran, then I just got down like this-- then I shot him three more times."

Rose's mom, Jana, says she is very proud of her Annie Oakley-style daughter.

"What I'm most proud about is she's a competitive shooter," her mom explained.  "She's 15.  We believe in firearms.  This could have been a very bad situation if she wasn't trained and very comfortable with guns, and I'm very happy it turned out the way it did."

Even Rose's brother Hayden, who plays linebacker on his football team, likes the way his little sister handled the situation.

"She's an overachiever I guess you could say," Hayden said.  "Softball, shooting, riding horses and what not-- she loves it out here.  She's a cool cat."

She's been shooting competitively since she was 10, and will even compete in a meet this weekend.

"If I wouldn't have had my gun, I don't know what I would have done."
