MISSING: Joe Zurnieden last seen July 1, car found in NE Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The Minneapolis Police Department is seeking the public’s help in locating 42-year-old Joe Zurnieden, and his wife told Fox 9 News she is worried he may have fallen into the Mississippi River.

Zurnieden was last seen at his home at about 6 a.m. on July 1. The vehicle he was driving was located in the area of 26th Avenue and Marshall Street in northeast Minneapolis on July 3, and his wife says his sudden disappearance is very out of character for the father of two.

"It's not like him," Katy Zurnieden told Fox 9 News. "Not at all."

It's been a full week since she last spoke with her husband, who is described as white, 6 feet tall, 165 pounds with dark, receding hair. Katy Zurnieden told Fox 9 News her last communication with him came just a few hours after he left for work.

"I was talking to him. I was concerned that he didn't have a lunch with him that day, so I said, 'Let me know where you are and I'll bring you lunch. Me and the girls will bring you lunch,' and I didn't hear from him again," she recalled.

Organizers announced a search for Zurnieden on Tuesday from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dozens of people checked in at Marshall Terrace Park, including organizer Dawn Agort-Kurth. Groups of 6-10 people wearing pants, long sleeves, and sturdy footwear searched along the banks of the Mississippi River, which his wife fears he may have fallen into.

"He goes for walks to clear his mind," she said. "He would say that he didn't want to do all of his work in his fan. He liked to find beautiful spots to just think."

The search is also being treated as a possible recovery effort, but police do not suspect foul play. Organizers asked volunteers to bring 25-foot rope and life jackets for safety near the water. Bug repellant and water were provided as volunteers continued the search along the river from 27th down to the Stone Arch Bridge.

Anyone with any information about this case is asked to send a text to 847 411 (tip 411), enter MPD and the tip or call the tipline at 612-692-TIPS (8477). All texts are anonymous.
