Illinois Treasurer's Office giving money back?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Illinois Treasurer's Office is sending good news to a bunch of Illinoisans: it has some of their money, and wants to give it back.

The office is sending letters to people about unclaimed property -- assets that get turned over to the state after five years. They could be from inactive bank accounts, insurance refunds, or stock dividends.

They often go unclaimed after people move. Other assets might have belonged to family members who passed away.

The Treasurer's Office has $1.8 billion of unclaimed property. Even if you don't get a letter, you can go to the treasurer's website to see if any is yours.

When you go to the treasurer's page, click on the "I-Cash" link.
