2 dead, 8 wounded in Tuesday shootings

Two people were killed and at least eight others were wounded in shootings on the city’s South and West sides Tuesday, including six people shot in a 18-minute period Tuesday night.

The most recent fatal shooting occurred at 10:11 p.m., when a man was shot to death while riding a bike in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said.

The 23-year-old was riding a bike in the 900 block of North Hamlin Avenue about 10:11 p.m. when a van pulled up and someone inside opened fire, striking him in the head, police said.

He was dead at the scene, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. His name was not being released Wednesday morning pending notification of his family.

About four minutes earlier, one teen boy was killed and another was injured in a South Side shooting.

The teens, 15 and 17, were leaving a store and walking through Robichaux Park in the 9200 block of South Eggleston Avenue at 10:07 p.m. when a white minivan pulled up and someone got out and fired at them, police said.

The 17-year-old was shot in the chest and back and was dead at the scene, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. His name was not being released Wednesday morning pending notification of his family.

The 15-year-old was shot in the leg and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition, police said.

The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred at 10:25 p.m. in the Hegewisch neighborhood on the Far South Side.

A 16-year-old boy and a man were standing outside in the 10000 block of South Avenue M when a maroon-colored sedan drove by and someone inside started shooting, police said.

The man, whose age was not immediately known, was shot twice in the chest and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said. The teen was shot in the side and taken to Christ Medical Center in “stable” condition.

According to a police source, both are self-admitted gang members.

About five minutes earlier, a teen boy was shot in the West Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The boy, 16, was walking with a group of males on the sidewalk in the 3800 block of West 67th Place at 10:20 p.m. when a white sedan drove by and someone inside fired at him, police said.

He was shot in the upper right thigh and was taken to Christ Medical Center in “stable” condition, police said.

A police source said the teen was a self-admitted gang member.

Earlier Tuesday night, a man was shot in the Riverdale neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The man, in his 20s, was shot multiple times while in the 13200 block of South Forrestville Avenue about 8:15 p.m., police said, citing preliminary information.

He was taken in good condition to Christ Medical Center, police said.

About 7:05 p.m., a man was shot in the head and critically wounded on the South Side.

The 19-year-old was driving near the intersection of East 89th Street and Stony Island Avenue with another vehicle following him at 7:05 p.m., police said. The 19-year-old crashed, and someone in the pursuing vehicle then shot him in the head. The other vehicle then drove off.

He was taken to Christ Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

A woman was shot in the head Tuesday afternoon in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

The 18-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the head in the 900 block of East 83rd Street about 1:20 p.m., police said.

She was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, police said. She was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she remains in serious condition.

Tuesday’s first shooting happened in the West Englewood neighborhood about 3:25 a.m.

A man, 19, was standing on a corner in the 6800 block of South Ashland Avenue when a dark-colored sedan drove past and someone inside fired at him, police said.

He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the right forearm, police said.
