GM Recall: Free Car Rental

Posted: Updated:
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Millions of GM car owners are filling dealerships to have a faulty ignition switch replaced, but there are long wait times for appointments. While you wait, the weeks, sometimes months for your turn, did you know that you can get a free rental car?

North Fulton's Judi Cormier found out about it and is driving a truck - at least temporarily - because her 2007 Saturn Sky is part of the massive GM safety recall. Ms. Cormier got a letter in March from General Motors that her ignition switch could move out of the "run" position cutting off the car while it's moving.

"I called a dealership to get a repair and they told me there was a six-to-eight week wait on the part they needed to fix the ignition," she said.

But honestly, this North Fulton resident, who spends of a lot her time in the car, got uncomfortable knowing that the government announced this defective part is linked to more than a dozen deaths.

"After hearing about all of the deaths related to his problem, I was not comfortable driving around for six-to-eight more weeks."

So, she called GM and asked for a rental car while she waited and they gave her one, a free ride on the house until she could get her car repaired.

She said it was very easy.

"I took my car up to the dealership, then dropped it off and the rental car company came and picked me up. And I was good to go."

A GM spokeswoman said there is a "sense of urgency for these ignition switches" to be switched out, but there is a back log. You see, GM stopped making the parts years ago, so there has been a slight delay in getting these new ignition switches back to market. The part is being manufactured now but GM dealerships have long appointment lines.

Information about free car rentals offered by the car maker is not easy to find on the company's web site but it's there -- keep looking.

In the meantime, GM recommends separating the car key from all other keys including the key fob to reduce the risk of the ignition switch moving on its own.

Taking on a big bank, even over something like a minor bank error, can be maddening. You feel like no one is listening. It's like being trapped in a maze you can't get out of, but somebody is noticing how frustrating that can be.
