Mich. girl mauled by raccoon to get new ear

Posted: Updated:
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) - A Michigan girl is about to undergo a very rare procedure that involves giving her something she hasn't had in a decade: a second ear.

This is just one of many reconstructive surgeries for Charlotte Ponce, who was attacked by a raccoon as a baby. The 12-year-old has been spending her summer days growing her new ear in her arm.

Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak took cartilage from Charlotte's ribs in April and carved it into the shape of an ear using a computer-generated template based on the 12-year-old's other ear.

Over many months with several surgeries, doctors have been rebuilding her face including a new nose, upper lip and cheek. Now, a surgeon will attach the organ during a 6- to 8-hour procedure Thursday.
