HAZEL CREST, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A Chicago man was killed and two others hurt in a four-vehicle crash that closed the eastbound lanes of I-80 near south suburban Hazel Crest for about three hours during the Friday afternoon rush.

The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near Kedzie Avenue, Illinois State Police said.

A Toyota SUV rear-ended a Dodge car, causing a chain-reaction collision that also involved two other cars, a Pontiac and a Hyundai, a statement from ISP said.

The driver of the Dodge was killed, and the drivers of the Toyota and Hyundai were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The man, 50, was pronounced dead at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest at 2:22 p.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. The man, whose name is not being released pending notification of his family, lived in the 8200 block of South Evans Avenue in Chicago.

The driver and a passenger in the Pontiac were not hurt, police said.

All eastbound lanes of I-80 were closed Friday afternoon with traffic diverted onto I-57. All lanes were reopened again as of 4:30 p.m., ISP said.
