1 dead, 1 injured in shooting on Detroit's west side

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -  An argument in Detroit ends with one man running down the street firing a gun. An innocent bystander was shot and killed trying to protect his daughter from the gunfire.

Fox 2's Taryn Asher is on the scene and reports the girl, who is not even a year old, was in the back of the car at the time.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. Monday.

Police say two men got into a physical altercation. One of the men went into his home on Underwood Street, near Joy Road and Livernois Avenue, grabbed a gun, walked outside and started shooting down the block.

Police say he struck the other man involved in the altercation, but while spraying the gunfire he also struck 56-year-old Cortez McCoy. He was visiting his mother at the time.

The other man injured was able to get help at a nearby party store.

The alleged shooter took off but, we're told, he got into an accident on the freeway so police were able to arrest him. Asher reports the gun suspected in the shooting was found in the 35-year-old's vehicle.
