LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - A major new development today in the dispute over the possible relocation of illegal immigrant children from Central American into the city of Vassar, Mich. The protests in Vassar have reached the ears of state Senator Mike Kowall.

He is drafting legislation that would cancel the licenses of state companies that want to relocate those Central American children into Michigan.

A Detroit lawmaker has also heard the protesters in the tiny community and he thinks some of the rhetoric against the children is racist.

"Racism is there. I will say that 'R' word and we've got to deal with it,"says Rep. Fred Durhal, Jr.

Shelli Weisberg, a lobbyist for the ACLU, is also upset by the rhetoric. "I could not disagree more. It's more than shocked, I'm so disheartened by it. I just didn't think we'd get here," she says.

The Senator from the Vassar area believes many of the protesters are not from the small town which is about 90 miles north of Detroit and, while some of the comments may be racist, he blames President Obama.

"Actually, the president, who is kind of opening the flood gates to let all these people come in without any policy whatsoever, now do you find that appalling? Or do you find that proper?" asks Mayville Senator Mike Green.

As for the senator's legislation to yank the license of companies that want to house the abandoned immigrant children, that will likely have to wait until the fall.
