(WJBK) - A Malaysian passenger plane carrying 295 people was reportedly hit by a missile over Ukraine.

So far, no one has taken reponsibility for the incident but it happened in a war-torn area near the Russian border. A U.S. official says authorities believe a surface-to-air missile took down the plane. Authorities are still working to confirm if any Americans were on board.

Meanwhile, the local Ukrainian community is really keeping a close eye on what's happening overseas.

"That conflict has been going on now for over three and a half months and our community has been out demonstrating, calling attention to it, and we're so pleased that in the last couple of days President Obama and the U.S. Congress have stepped up with more sanctions against Russia with giving Ukraine military assistance," says Boris Potapenko of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.
