70 Headstones Toppled At Wilmington Cemetery

WILMINGTON, Del. -

Police are looking for the people who toppled more than 70 tombstones.

The damage estimate? As much as $25,000.

Maria Russak fights back tears as she looks at her beloved mother's toppled tombstone. It's one of dozens knocked over by heartless vandals Tuesday night at the Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington.

"Very sad. Hurting. Why this has to happen in America! Butt to that at 11:31 "I wonder who could do something like this," said Maria.

The Cemetery is on the national historic registry, operated since 2008 by the nonprofit Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery.

"It goes back to 1872 and to have them destroyed is really destroying some of history this place is renowned for," said Kate Wilhere on behalf of the cemetery.

60 tombstones and 10 obelisks knocked over in one night!

And it couldn't have been easy. Some of those markers weighed as much as a thousand pounds.

"I can't imagine the brute force had to be on the stones to knock them over." Butt 16:20 " hard to understand why anyone would do this," said Wilhere.

Ethel Bernhard has familyt here and rushed over in a panic as soon as she heard the news. Her family's final resting place was untouched, but those of her many friends were desecrated and disrespected.

"I am hardly able to speak without crying because I am so upset this has happened because all these folks. I know all these folks," said Ethel.
