Vigil Held In Philly For Flight MH17 Victims

PHILADELPHIA -

Ukrainians in Philadelphia gathered for a vigil Friday night to remember the victims.

They called for accountability from those responsible.

They rallied, lit candles and left flowers under the Ukrainian flag on the Ben Franklin Parkway to mourn the lives lost in the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in Ukraine.

The plane was shot down in the area of eastern Ukraine that has been the site of deadly conflict for months. U.S. officials believe Russian backed separatists may be responsible, but still there are many unanswered questions .

"It's really hard for me. A person who has Russian parents to deal with today's situation." Said Iryna Halaway.

But Halaway maintains events like Friday's vigil and rally will continue to unite people of all backgrounds

On the way to the rally one of the organizers, Mary Kalyna was met by an embrace from a stranger who is visiting from Ukraine's Summi region. Our camera was rolling for the emotional meeting. Olha Yukhymenko says she stopped to speak with Kalyna because she recognized her country's flag.

She says she lives some 200 miles from the war zone but is worried about returning home next week

"She says she hopes for the best and we believe the best will come," said Kalyna.
