How to handle a dog attack

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - After a 46-year-old jogger was killed in a dog attack, a local expert gives advise on what to do if you're attacked by a dog.

Doctor Lawrence Herzog has been a veterinarian for 39 years and helped with animal control in Grosse Pointe Park for 32 years. He's come across a lot of dogs in a lot of situations.

He knows how scary they can be and instructs children to make like a tree or make like a rock when encountering a dangerous dog. It's good advice for kids and adults.

"You want to keep your hands by your side and if you get real frightened just roll up in to a ball," he advises.

Try lowering your eyes and back away slowly. Do not run away, scream or flail your arms.

"You should assume that any dog will bite under the right circumstances," he says.

Herzog says the tragic death of Craig Sytsma while jogging may have been unavoidable given the nature of the dogs involved in the attack.

"Cane Corsos are notorious for being quite aggressive," he says. "There may have been nothing he could have done when a dog is 110 pounds and there's two of them attacking, you don't have a lot of chance."
