CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - If people were bracing for a violent weekend, it did not take long for those fears to become a reality. For the second week in a row, a family is dealing with the death of a young child who didn't even live to see his fourteenth birthday.

One person was killed and six others were wounded after a shooting Friday evening in the West Side East Garfield Park neighborhood, according to fire authorities.

About 6 p.m., multiple people were standing in the 700 block of South California Avenue when they were shot, police said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Chicago Fire Dept. spokesman. According to family members, the victim is 13-year-old Samuel Walker.

Relatives of the deceased boy say he was standing outside a neighborhood store when someone drove by an opened fire right under a police blue light camera.

Two people were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, two were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in fair condition and one was taken to Saint Anthony Hospital in good condition, fire authorities said. Their ages were not immediately known.

Another person was shot but refused medical attention, according to authorities.

Dozens of police swarmed to the scene to maintain order and gather evidence, while others fanned out to try and find those responsible.

Relatives of the boy say the city needs help.

"We need better help in this community. We need officers, we need help. These gang bangers (are) just taking everything over and now this little boy is dead. It's just wrong," the victim's cousin Candis Smith said.

"I'm praying, hoping it will stop any day. Nobody needs this in their life," Anthony Patterson said.

The violence is taking a toll on neighborhoods physically and mentally. One person told FOX 32's Craig Wall she plans on moving because of the violence.

"I retired from the military. I just moved back home in February, but I'm planning to move to George within like the next year or so," Taquanjria Wyatt said.

Shortly before the deadly shooting, FOX 32's Craig Wall spoke with the commander of the far West Side Austin neighborhood about how she and her counterparts strategize, but then have to improvise.

"Things change as minutes go by. So we may have to change our deployment, change strategies based on information we relieve, based upon what we hear on the radio. We make the changes as need be," Barbara West, 15th District Commander, said.

At Lexington and California, resident expressed a familiar sentiment.

"The neighborhood is rough anyway but the police try to do what they can. But they can't stop it. They can't stop this," Larry Morris said.

No one was in custody for the shooting Saturday but police said they are tracking down good leads in the case, which is believed to be gang-related.

Walker has a documented gang affiliation, police said.

Some of the other victims are also gang affiliated, police said.
