Eleven-year-old Shamiya Adams won’t only be missed by her family… she is being mourned by an entire community.

Hundreds gathered to celebrate her life at the Living Word Christian Center in west suburban Forest Park Saturday. Shamiya was killed by a stray bullet last week.

“Shamiya - a beautiful child, a cheerleader, a queen, a peace maker, respectful to all and will most be remembered as a best friend,” Tiffany Tillman, Shamiya’s principal at Melody Elementary School said.

Family, friends and community leaders paid their respects and addressed the violence in Chicago that’s killing our children.

“Shamiya’s mother said to me, when other people’s children are shot I weep for them. I did not know mine would be next,” Rev. Jesse Jackson said.

Several prayed for the safety of all of our children and asked for their protection.

Governor Pat Quinn told the community that, even in her short life, Shamiya taught us to be better people.

“Reading about her life at school, she engaged in a penny drive to raise money for books at her school. She, at 11-years-old, was babysitting for kindergartners and showing them the right path. I think it’s so meaningful that we have young boys and girls that understand the ethic of service and it’s our highest human calling,” said Quinn

And while Shamiya is no longer with us, her principal says she’s in a better place.

“But now Shamiya, it’s time for you to move to the front of your class in the best school ever, heaven university. Where you will continue to learn with a smile that will shine all over the universe,” said Tillman

CPS helped fund the funeral.  Any extra money raised will help Shamiya's mother care for the family.
