New law expands Illinois Holocaust commission

Posted: Updated:

SKOKIE, Ill. (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation that will expand the Illinois Holocaust and Genocide Commission.

Quinn signed Senate Bill 3129 on Sunday at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in the northern Chicago suburb of Skokie. The new law increases the number of commission members from 18 to 22 and makes one of the commission members a student.

The commission was created in 2010. It works to increase public awareness of the Holocaust and other genocides.

The new law takes effect immediately. Illinois mandates public elementary and high schools include study of the Holocaust.
