Sen. Kirk calls Hamas 'Nazis' as Israeli, Palestinian groups protest in Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There were a set of competing protests in the Loop Monday. The Jewish United Fund held a pro-Israel rally, while across the street the Chicago Coalition for Justice in Palestine held their own protest.

City officials implemented intense security measures, placing sharp shooters on the tops of some area buildings.

Several hundred protesters chanted and waved Palestinian flags on one corner of Clark and Randolph, while across the intersection hundreds more waved Israeli banners.

After Senator Mark Kirk spoke to the pro-Israel rally, he told FOX 32 News that President Obama is wrong to push for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, where more than a thousand have reportedly now lost their lives. Kirk compared Israel's war with Hamas, the Palestinian faction that rules Gaza, to World War II.

"Hamas is like Nazis. The more Nazis you got, the more Hamas you get, the more death you get," Kirk said. "It was worth thousands of lives to wipe out the Nazis. And then the world was much better once they were wiped out. The only way to secure peace in the Middle East is to wipe out those who would bring terror to the Middle East."

Many at the rally, organized by the Coalition for Justice in Palestine, accused the Israeli military of terrorism.

"Shame on Mr. Kirk that goes with these lies and fabrications. Tell us, where are the children that have been killed?" asked Fari Harand, a protester for Palestine.

"We are not here to defend Hamas. We don't care about Hamas. We are here for the humanity. We are here for the kids being killed every day," Raid Al-Nadi added, a Palestinian living in Chicago.

However, Israel supporters fired back.

"They lie as naturally as you talk. They don't want peace. They've been at war with us for over 60 years. They want nothing but to destroy us," said Lisa Liel, who is a citizen of both Israel and the U.S.

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Monday of a "prolonged" war in Gaza, his close friend Sen. Kirk told FOX 32 that it could last two months and would inevitably claim many more lives.
