HAMMOND, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Chicago man is facing DUI charges after a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 94 that injured an Indiana State Police trooper early Saturday, authorities said.

Sgt. Dwayne Dillahunty was standing outside his police car about 1:26 a.m. while working a traffic enforcement project near the Calumet Avenue overpass in Hammond when a black 2013 Jeep SUV headed east on the interstate veered off the road and struck the police car, according to a statement from Indiana State Police.

The crash caused the police car to hit Dillahunty and knock him into the concrete median, police said.

The Jeeps’ driver, 43-year-old Norris Benbow of Chicago, ran away but was arrested by Munster, Ind., police a short time later just south of the interstate, police said.

Dillahunty was taken to Munster Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Benbow was also taken to Munster Community, where tests showed that he had a blood alcohol level of .14, police said.

He was taken to Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Ind., and charged with driving while intoxicated causing bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license, police said.
