PHILADELPHIA -

Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels has been claimed on revocable trade waivers by an unidentified club, sources tell FOX Sports' Senior Baseball Writer Ken Rosenthal.

The claim means the Phillies have 48 hours to work out a trade or pull him back.

If the Phillies want to move the 30-year-old left-hander, three-time all-star and 2008 World Series MVP, Rosenthal tweeted the team probably would be better off waiting until the offseason, "when they could engage 29 teams, not just one."

Hamels can only be sent to nine teams without his consent: the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, or the New York Yankees.

Hamels pitched well again in his latest start for the Phillies on Sunday, but the rest of the team did not help him out. Poor defense and no offense led to a 4-0 loss to Washington.

Hamels has only six wins this year despite have an ERA of .242.

Outfielder Marlon Byrd was also claimed on revocable trade waivers by an unidentified club, sources tell Rosenthal. Byrd, who is on his second stint with the Phils, leads the team with 21 home runs.

And closer Jonathan Papelbon cleared waivers, Rosenthal also reported on his Twitter account. Papelbon has limited no-trade clause protection, but recently told reporters that would not be an obstacle if the Phillies could find a trade partner.
