Mummers Consider Changing Parade Route

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA-The Mummers may soon be changing their parade route. They’re hoping to change the judging and the length of the parade.

Traditionally, the Mummers Parade would travel much deeper into the heart of South Philly; however, now it will likely end sooner.  Organizers are asking the city for permission to reverse the Mummer’s route.

The Mummers want to get the judging out of the way by starting the parade at City Hall. The new route would then take marchers down Broad Street, ending on Washington Avenue. Traditionally, the Mummers route started deep in South Philly on Oregon Avenue, heading north on Broad to City Hall.

Tom Loomis heads the Philadelphia String Band Association. He says the route change is a reaction to dwindling crowds and an attempt at keeping a Philly institution from growing stale.

“Moving it out of what we call the traditional heart of the parade was difficult. We are still in South Philly. We're still at Broad and Washington Avenue. Still going to be the culmination a big part of the parade,” said Loomis.

Residents are fired up over the proposed changes.

“Doing this is just going to kill this parade. This is the people's parade. This is South Philly's parade and to do something like this is a huge mistake,” said South Philadelphia resident Kim Massare.

Massare is South Philly born and bred. She wants the Mummers to liven up the parade with more community interaction and performances on the traditional route rather than change it altogether.

“It’s really just ripping this parade out of its roots in South Philly. The parade does not belong in center city it belong in South Philly,” she said.

The city has green lit the route change for now. A final decision comes in December on the shorter route, which the city says will save on police and sanitation costs.
