Hayley Turner not abducted, charges possible

Posted: Updated:
ECORSE, Mich. (WJBK) - Monroe County teen Hayley Turner was not abducted. Sunday, the Monroe County Sheriff's Department issued a statement saying as a result of an interview with the alleged victim, "it was determined that the incident did not take place, as originally reported. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office will be closing out the investigation and forwarding the complaint to the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office for review."

Fox 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton explains what could happen next. Click on the video player to watch Robin Schwartz's report.

Hayley told her friend "he has a gun" and the phone was disconnected. That was the frightening story that touched off the search for 18 year old Hayley Turner. It started Thursday night in Bedford Township -- more than 40 officers from several police agencies spent hours looking for the teen after it was reported that she pulled over to check on a man lying in a ditch, then disappeared. Her car was found idling without her in it. Her mother even appeared on camera with this desperate plea.

"Hayley if you can hear me, please call anybody," she said, fighting back tears. "We just want you safely home, no questions asked."

But investigators had a lot of questions when the teen was found Friday in Ecorse. Witnesses say they saw her jump from a moving vehicle. Sources are telling Fox 2 police drove her around the area with her parents and discovered things she'd been telling them were simply impossible. Eventually, the truth came out -- the teen was never abducted.

"Hayley didn't have to say anything to the police, but it appears that Hayley lied to the police and that you can't do," said Fox 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton. "The law says if you're going to talk to the police don't lie. If you make a false police report, if you tell the police a false story, that's a crime."

Langton says Turner could face felony charges. We still don't know exactly what took place during the 16 hours she was missing, but we do know police used valuable resources including a helicopter in their search.

"Police take missing persons reports very seriously, it's a 24-hour operation, there are specialists in the area, the comb the field, they alert the media," said Langton. "We don't know what the motivation is but if it's shown that she lied, she'll be prosecuted for that and she should be."

The police statement says Hayley's family is asking for privacy during this difficult time. Stay with Fox 2 and myfoxdetroit.com for continuing coverage.
