Community in shock over abduction hoax, criminal charges possible

Posted: Updated:
BEDFORD TWP. -
On Friday Hayley Turner was on her cell phone with a friend when she said she saw a man lying in a ditch not far from her house in Bedford Twp.

Then the 18-year-old said she was abducted at gunpoint and later after being found in Ecorse, told police she had to jump from a moving car to escape.

She later confessed that the incident was a hoax and people in southeast Michigan are livid.

"So many people got involved and so many people were worried," said Emily Mueller, a Bedford Twp. resident.

Mueller, like so many people. were floored when they found out that Turner's story, was just that.

Ecorse police questioned Turner and spotted the inconsistencies in her tale.

"At some point she couldn't tell me whether the guy had blue eyes or green eyes, I thought that was hard to believe," said  Gregory Blade, Ecorse Police detective lieutenant. "There were a lot of questions that couldn't be answered. And I don't think the young lady was being very truthful."

Turner later confessed at the Monroe County Sheriff Department office. Now, Turner is facing possible criminal charges.

Sources tell Fox 2's Randy Wimbley that Turner's parents may have known she was safe the entire time.

Fox 2 went to the Turner residence, but nobody answered the door.

People in and around her hometown feel betrayed.

"It's kind of sad," said Kate Schmills Bedford Twp. Resident. "She obviously has some issues and I hope (she) gets the help (she) needs."
