Fantasy football may cost employers $13.4 billion in lost productivity

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Fantasy football could be costing employers billions of dollars in lost productivity as millions of Americans spend work hours managing their teams, according to a report.

Chicago-based Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. estimated that more than $13 billion has been lost overall. They do admit, though, that it is almost impossible to put an exact dollar amount on the lost productivity.

The company figured out the billion dollar amount by using both average hourly earnings of workers on private nonfarm payrolls, and the estimated amount of employees who participate in fantasy football. The company assumed that each employee spends about 2 hours a week on Fantasy Football. So, over a 15 week fantasy football schedule, the price of lost productivity works out to be $13.4 billion.
