Police ID carjacking suspect found dead in Phoenix car crash

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Police have identified a suspect who allegedly carjacked a woman in broad daylight before ending up dead.

Phoenix police say the man was 29-year-old Michael Medina.

The neighborhood at Clarendon Avenue and 22nd Street was filled with police for much of Friday night as they investigated the deadly carjacking.

On Saturday, the police tape was gone, but neighbors were still shaken about what happened.

Belen Gonzalez's husband was home around 3 p.m. when their neighbor allegedly fired shots at the suspect, who later died.

"He was home.. he said he heard two shots.. that's all he knows," she said.

Phoenix police say Medina approached a 66-year-old victim at her home as she pulled into her driveway.

"He asked if he could borrow the phone, she said no because she didn't know who he was, apparently he grabbed her and threw her out of the car and on the ground," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

According to police, the woman's neighbors -- a married couple -- tried to intervene.

The 63-year-old wife opened the passenger side door and when the suspect pulled away, police say she was hit by the car and her head was injured.  Her 66-year-old husband, according to detectives, retrieved his gun and shot the suspect.

The suspect drove away before crashing in the area of 24th Street and Thomas Road.  He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The carjacking victim and the couple involved asked for media privacy, but many of their neighbors say they're good people who always look out for one another.

"The other guy died and I feel so bad for them because I think they are very good people," said Gonzalez.  "This is a very nice neighborhood.. sometimes bad things happen."

Police say the cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

The investigation will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review, but at this time, the neighbor is not facing any charges in the shooting.
