Community Health network hacked, patients' information stolen

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It is estimated that every single person in America will have their personal information stolen at least once in their lives. But more than likely, someone will have their information stolen several times.

Community Health Systems, which operates 206 hospitals across the county has suffered a data breach that put more than 4.5 million people's information at risk. The company operates three hospitals in the Chicago area - Vista Medical Center and Vista Medical Center West in Waukegan and Metro South Medical Center in Blue Island.

No credit or debit card information is at risk. But, the hackers reportedly gained access to patients' names, social security numbers, addresses, birthdays and telephone numbers. So the victims of the data breach are at risk of identity theft.

According to the company, anyone who received treatment from one of their hospitals within the last five years was affected by the hacking.

Community Health Systems has hired investigators to look further into the incident. The FBI is also working closely with the company to catch the hackers. Experts say the hackers are apparently from China and they were originally trying to access the hospitals' intellectual property.

The hospital network managed to wipe the hackers' malware from its computer systems and implemented protections to prevent similar break-ins.

Experts say the data breach is another reminder for people to always be very cautious with their personal information online and to always check your credit card statement.
