Malibu Residents Unite To Protest PCB-Free School Zones

Posted: Updated:
Malibu, CA -

(FOX 11) It is the first day of class for three Malibu schools. The campuses were deemed safe, despite concerns from parents that cancer-causing agents are still present.

Just last week, several celebrities joined about 150 Malibu residents calling for additional testing for contaminants at Malibu middle and high schools and Juan Cabrillo elementary.

The rally was part of a year long fight between the Santa Monica – Malibu unified school District and some parents, after high levels of cancer-causing PCBs were found in soil and caulk samples. Three teachers diagnosed with thyroid cancer believe their illnesses may be linked to the PCBs.

The school district has conducted a cleanup, but another independent test commissioned by an advocacy group indicates unsafe levels of PCBs are still present.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband offered to pay for additional tests, but the offer was not excepted. The EPA requires The testing of air in Dallas, but many parents say the caulk should be tested.
