CITY OF DETROIT - "It was above my knees, I had my dog in the basement," said Robanna Garner, whose home flooded. "I didn't know it flooded until I heard (the dog) barking and had to go get him."

It is a line full of storm stories, one after the other of people still dealing with their drenched and destroyed homes. These pictures will always remind Mary Bitzman of the heartache and hardship.

"We couldn't do anything until the next day," said Bitzman, whose house flooded. "We had to wait for the water to go down then throw everything away."

Bitzman was among the 50 or so people who were at the Butzel complex on Lyndon Street long before it opened on Tuesday. It was turned into a temporary resource center offering answers and insight during these troubling times that are starting to take a toll.

"You don't have flood insurance, the insurance companies wouldn't take care of anything unless you have it," said Lorenzo Williams, whose house flooded. "A lot of people need help to recover their losses."

Which is why they came here. It doesn't promise anything but it does give hope. There are experts on everything from financial assistance, to choosing the right restoration company, to organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation Army all under one roof.

"Today we are offering resources to all Detroit residents because we know the flood that happened on Monday left them in disarray," said Ebony Pedraza of Detroit Homeland Security.

It is face-to-face contact these Detroiters desperately need. Conversations some have been waiting days for, while it certainly won't lessen what they have gone through every little bit helps.

"It's very heartbreaking you know," Williams said. "I've never seen it this bad before."
