Military dad surprises daughter at Farmington football game

Posted: Updated:
FARMINGTON, Mich. (WJBK) -

What began with a youth football game lead to tears of joy Sunday for a young Michigan cheerleader. Her military dad came home early, giving her an emotional surprise.

Kayleigh Potter, 8, gave it her all on the sidelines. She's a freshman cheerleader for the Farmington Rockets. She smiles at the crowd but her own father has never been to a game - until now.

Before every game the announcer gives every player and cheerleader their 15 seconds of fame announcing their names one-by-one. This time, Kayleigh's father, Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Potter, was in center field waiting.

"I just ran straight to him and gave him a huge hug," the 8-year-old tells Fox 2. "I miss him very, very, very much!"

Potter enlisted in 2001. He was stationed in Jacksonville, North Carolina and recently moved to Virginia. He's only home for the weekend but for the next few days home and where the heart is are the exact same place.
