Judge ends federal oversight of Detroit Police Department

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Changes are coming to the Detroit Police Department.

For more than a decade, the department has been operating under the watchful eye of a federal monitor. Acting on a request from the city and the U.S. Department of Justice, a judge is ending that federal oversight.

Detroit entered into two consent judgements in 2003 after police officers were accused of using excessive force, illegal detentions and unconstitutional conditions of confinement.

But critics argue that the use of force has not changed in the department. U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade has scheduled a news conference within the next hour to discuss the motion.
