Students Prepare To Return To School With Free Supplies

Posted: Updated:

We all know Labor Day Weekend is the unofficial end of summer, but it also mean something else...back to school.

Students prepped for the upcoming school year, filling more than 250 new backpacks with all the essentials.

It was all free.

"People are trying to come together. Black, white, Latino, Asian, all nationalities because they understand that the children are our future,” parent Dennis Laws said.

The school supply drive outside Fell Elementary has the school's principal feeling optimistic.

"That means we're going to get off to a good start. We do more with less. We come together as a community to make sure that all of outr students receive a quality education despite our fiscal crisis here in the Philadelphia School District,” Fell Elementary principal Omahr Ashe said.

An organizer for the South Philly event got inspired to do the give away by a friend.

"His sister passed, who was a toddler a few years back. He wanted to give back to our community, our neighborhood,” Carol Leidy of Tools 4 Back to School said.

Across town, a local church passed out more school necessities for their Allegheny West neighborhood.

A new backpack that matches her hair color has E'lexis Morgan excited for 9th grade.

"If you start ready then you'll end ready,” she said.

Just like the school district, her mother Simone is watching every penny.

Getting her daughter equipped for class without breaking the bank really helps.

"Even though the pennies are tight, we still have to educate our children,” Simone Morgan said.

Some parents said these drives go beyond school supplies.

"The experience of my kids getting to see organizations come together to promote peace and positivity means a lot to me,” Laws said.

All students in the Philadelphia School District will head back to class on September 8th.
