Athens officer shot while responding to domestic dispute

ATHENS, Ga. - An officer was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance at an Athens' apartment midday Sunday.

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the officer responded to Fairways at Jennings Mill apartments just before noon on Sunday. He found 28-year-old James M. Marcantonio repeatedly banging on the door to the apartment and trying to get inside.

Police say the man and the officer got into a struggle during which the officer's gun was fired, shooting the officer once.

Marcantonio was arrested and Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Battery on a Police Officer.

The officer was rushed to a local hospital to be treated. His name has not yet been released.

The GBI has been asked to assist in the investigation.
