Residents inside Northport Apartments in Macomb Township say that Sunday afternoon they saw a 27-year-old neighbor riding a dirt bike with his 5-year-old son along busy Garfield Road.

Neighbors say they've seen him riding before - but this time they say he had his child with him.

"The first thing that caught my eye was he was riding in his dad's lap," neighbor Tim Hale said. "And they were weaving throughout drainage ditches which are pretty steep."

Two witnesses tell police they saw the father do three jumps. On the third jump the child flew off. Those witnesses say that the bike then ran over the 5-year-old.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office says the small, orange dirt bike was going about 40 to 45 miles per hour when the child was thrown from the bike.

The boy was immediately taken to McLaren Hospital in Mount Clemens, then transported to Children's Hospital of Michigan with injuries to his legs and arms and road rash. He is currently in stable condition.

While one witness says the helmet the boy was wearing came off, others say they didn't see the boy wearing one at all.
