Police: new carjacking trend is younger suspects, more violent cases

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -  The video shows chilling images during Tuesday night's Detroit carjacking spree.  Fox 2 obtained surveillance video that shows the crew of five suspects harassing and assaulting drivers at multiple locations near Joy and Southfield.

The group is believe to have committed three carjackings and a robbery in just three hours. Police say this crew of five had four boys and a girl whose brother at 23, was the oldest and the most aggressive.

He can be seen on video pistol whipping one of his victims.

The youngest member of the crew was 14 years old.

The young age is not shocking to Detroit Police Sgt. Vernal Newson of the commercial auto theft division.

"No, I've had one younger than that," Newson said. "I had one that was 11."

Sadly police say - that seems to be the new trend.

"We basically have two groups," Newson said. "We have a younger group and an older group.  The younger group is less organized and more violent."
"They did they use a gun for all, yes the weapon was used for all incidents."

Newson's  auto theft squad -- his under cover crew,  tracks down the suspects and the victims' stolen cars.

Most carjacked vehicles either used to commit other crimes or taken to a chop shop -- and sold for parts. This year alone Newson's squad and Detroit police have slashed carjackings in the city by 36 percent.

They are also making more arrests, catching all five of Tuesday's suspects in just a few hours.
